From 2nd to 4th February 2026, the Tanzania Road Safety Initiative (TARSI) successfully conducted a Road Safety and HIV Awareness Campaign in Nanjilinji Ward, Kilwa District, Lindi Region, within the project area of the NAKIU Bridge construction.

The campaign was implemented in line with mandatory legal and contractual requirements governing road and bridge construction projects, which require that communities surrounding infrastructure projects must be provided with road safety and public health awareness to mitigate risks associated with construction activities.

The NAKIU Bridge Project is:

  • Financed by: World Bank
  • Contractor: China Wuyi Engineering Co. Ltd
  • Consultant / Employer’s Representative: TANROADS

Objective of the Campaign

The primary objective of the campaign was to reduce road safety risks and public health challenges arising from construction activities by strengthening awareness among local communities, workers, and road users. The program focused on:

  • Safe movement around construction zones
  • Prevention of road traffic accidents
  • Pedestrian and child road safety
  • HIV prevention, awareness, and behavioral change
  • Occupational and community safety

Communities Reached

During the campaign, TARSI successfully delivered awareness sessions to the following groups:

  • Nanjilinji A Village
  • Nakiu Village
  • Construction Project Workers
  • Pupils of Nanjilinji A Primary School
  • Special emphasis was placed on children, pedestrians, and workers, who are among the most vulnerable groups in road construction environments.

Compliance with Legal and Safeguard Requirements

This awareness campaign was conducted in full compliance with national road safety regulations and World Bank Environmental and Social Safeguard requirements, which emphasize community engagement, risk mitigation, and protection of affected populations during infrastructure development.

Through close collaboration with project stakeholders and local leadership, TARSI ensured that the awareness activities were inclusive, participatory, and impactful, contributing to safer construction practices and healthier communities.

TARSI Commitment

TARSI remains committed to promoting road safety, public health, and community resilience in all infrastructure development projects across Tanzania. We continue to work with government institutions, development partners, contractors, and consultants to ensure that development goes hand in hand with safety, awareness, and social responsibility.
